Origin Green spirulina smoothie
While blending frozen fruits into thick morning beverages is a decidedly modern health trend, the star ingredient itself has an ancient and revered history. Spirulina was famously harvested from the alkaline lakes of Mexico by the Aztecs, who dried the nutrient-dense algae into cakes for endurance and strength. Understanding the incredible superfood legacy behind a modern reveals why this ancient staple has become a cornerstone of contemporary wellness routines.
Why I Love This Recipe
I love how this recipe effortlessly balances the intense, savory notes of the algae with the creamy, natural sweetness of frozen bananas and mangoes. It takes less than five minutes to blend together, yet delivers a massive dose of iron, vitamins, and healthy fats from the added avocado. Plus, customizing your own allows you to easily sneak extra leafy greens into your diet in a format that tastes exactly like a tropical treat.

kcalIngredients
1 ripe banana, peeled, sliced, and frozen
1/2 cup frozen mango chunks (or pineapple)
1/4 ripe avocado
1 firmly packed cup fresh baby spinach
1 tsp high-quality spirulina powder
1 tbsp chia seeds or hemp hearts
1 cup coconut water or unsweetened almond milk
A squeeze of fresh lime juice (optional, for brightness)
Directions
- Add the coconut water (or almond milk), fresh spinach, frozen banana, frozen mango, avocado, spirulina powder, and chia seeds into a high-speed blender.
- Blend on medium speed for 15 seconds to break down the spinach, then increase the speed to high.
- Continue blending for 45–60 seconds until the mixture is completely smooth, creamy, and vibrantly green with no visible flecks of greens.
- If the smoothie is too thick, add an extra splash of liquid and blend for another 5 seconds. If you want a brighter flavor, blend in a quick squeeze of fresh lime juice.
- Pour immediately into a tall glass and enjoy while cold.
Notes
- Spirulina Dosage: Spirulina has a very distinct, slightly oceanic flavor. If you are new to this superfood, start with just 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon and gradually work your way up to a full teaspoon as your palate adjusts.
- Smoothie Bowl Option: Serve this as a thick smoothie bowl by reducing the liquid by half. Pour it into a bowl and top with fresh berries, sliced almonds, coconut flakes, and a drizzle of honey.
