Origin Healthy Homemade Granola
The concept of baking rolled oats into crisp clusters actually dates back to the 19th-century American health food movement, originally developed as a highly digestible, nutrient-dense cereal alternative. Today, the modern evolution of this beloved pantry staple relies on the globally recognized health benefits of whole grain oats to provide sustained energy, complex carbohydrates, and essential dietary fiber, offering a much cleaner, wholesome alternative to the heavily processed commercial cereals lining supermarket shelves.
Why I Love This Recipe
I love how incredibly forgiving and adaptable this recipe is—you can easily clean out your pantry by throwing in whatever raw nuts, seeds, or dried fruits you happen to have on hand. It consistently yields those massive, satisfying, cookie-like clusters everyone fights over without requiring any complicated culinary techniques, making it an amazing staple that nutrition experts frequently highlight in guides for smart, budget-friendly meal prep. Plus, a single batch stays perfectly crispy in a glass mason jar for weeks!

kcalIngredients
2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (certified gluten-free if needed)
1 cup mixed raw nuts and seeds (such as chopped pecans, sliced almonds, and pumpkin seeds)
1/4 cup melted coconut oil (or extra-virgin olive oil for a savory edge)
1/3 cup pure maple syrup (or raw honey)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp fine sea salt (crucial for balancing the sweetness)
1/2 cup dried fruit (such as dried cranberries, raisins, or chopped dates)
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the old-fashioned rolled oats, mixed raw nuts and seeds, ground cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir to combine the dry ingredients.
- Pour the melted coconut oil, pure maple syrup, and vanilla extract over the oat mixture. Toss everything thoroughly with a spatula until all the oats and nuts are evenly coated and slightly sticky.
- Pour the mixture onto your prepared baking sheet. Spread it out into an even layer, then use the back of your spatula to press the granola down firmly into the pan. (Pressing it down tightly is the secret to getting big clusters!).
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the granola is lightly golden brown and fragrant. Do not stir the granola while it bakes!
- Remove from the oven and let the granola cool completely on the pan undisturbed for at least 45 minutes. It will harden and crisp up as it cools down.
- Once entirely cool, use your hands to gently break the baked sheet of granola into large clusters. Sprinkle in your dried fruit and toss lightly to combine.
Notes
- Oat Selection: You must use old-fashioned rolled oats for this recipe. Quick oats or instant oats will turn to mush and will not yield a crispy texture, while steel-cut oats are too hard to bake this way.
- The Golden Rule of Dried Fruit: Never bake your dried fruit! It will burn, turn bitter, and become rock-hard in the oven. Always wait until the granola has finished baking and cooling before stirring it in.
