Origin Gingerberry Smoothie

The practice of infusing potent medicinal roots like ginger into sweet fruit bases has long-standing roots in traditional Ayurvedic and Eastern healing practices, where warming spices are frequently used to balance the cold nature of raw foods. Today, modern wellness cafes have transformed this ancient holistic principle into a vibrant, drinkable format, tapping into the globally recognized nutritional power of fresh berries to deliver a massive dose of vitamin C and cellular protection in every sip.

Why I Love This Recipe

I love how the spicy kick of the fresh ginger completely elevates a standard fruit blend, adding a sophisticated depth of flavor that keeps you coming back for more. It is incredibly refreshing, naturally dairy-free, and gentle on the stomach, making it a fantastic morning ritual that dietitians frequently recommend in guides for gut-healing breakfast recipes. Plus, it takes almost zero prep work if you keep a stash of frozen berries in your freezer!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)

  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger root, peeled and roughly chopped

  • 1/2 large ripe banana (frozen)

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or coconut water for a lighter finish)

  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

Directions

  • Pour the almond milk (or coconut water) into the pitcher of a high-speed blender, followed by the freshly peeled ginger and lemon juice.
  • Blend the liquid and ginger together on medium speed for 15–20 seconds. This breaks down the ginger completely so there are no sharp, spicy chunks left behind in your drink.
  • Add the frozen mixed berries, frozen banana half, and chia seeds to the liquid base.
  • Blend on high speed for 60 seconds until the mixture is thick, vibrantly purple, and completely smooth.
  • Pour immediately into chilled glasses and serve fresh.

Notes

  • Ginger Tip: The spice level of fresh ginger can vary. If you love a fiery kick, increase the ginger to a full inch. If you are sensitive to spice or making this for kids, start with just a 1/4-inch slice and adjust to taste.
  • Blender Trick: Blending the ginger with the liquid before adding the frozen fruit is a crucial step if you don’t have a high-speed blender, ensuring a silky, chunk-free texture.
